Paul M. Wiles
Paul Wiles led Novant Health as its CEO from its formation through the merger of Carolina Medicorp, Inc. and Presbyterian Healthcare in 1997 until his retirement on December 31, 2011. It is a not-for-profit healthcare system serving communities from Northern Virginia to South Carolina and Northern Georgia and throughout North Carolina. Novant has a combined total of 2709 acute care beds in 13 hospitals. The largest components are Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem and Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. Other facilities and programs include 1,125 physicians in 364 clinics, 100 outpatient surgery and diagnostic centers, rehabilitation programs and community health outreach programs. Novant employs 26,000 staff and provides approximately $469 million annually in community benefit.
During his tenure as CEO of Novant Health and its predecessor organization in 1985, it grew from one hospital to 13, from two physicians to 1125, and revenues grew from $80 million to $3.5 billion.
Novant Health’s notable achievements include receiving the prestigious Ernest A. Codman award presented by The Joint Commission in 2004 and again in 2008 for improving the quality and safety of care provided to patients. In addition, the American Nurses’ Credentialing Center recognizes the nursing programs at five Novant hospitals for their excellence and quality with the organization’s Magnet recognition.
