Paul M. Wiles

       Paul Wiles led Novant Health as its CEO from its formation through the merger of Carolina Medicorp, Inc. and Presbyterian Healthcare in 1997 until his retirement on December 31, 2011.  It is a not-for-profit healthcare system serving communities from Northern Virginia to South Carolina and Northern Georgia and throughout North Carolina.  Novant has a combined total of 2709 acute care beds in 13 hospitals.  The largest components are Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem and Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.  Other facilities and programs include 1,125 physicians in 364 clinics, 100 outpatient surgery and diagnostic centers, rehabilitation programs and community health outreach programs.  Novant employs 26,000 staff and provides approximately $469 million annually in community benefit.

        During his tenure as CEO of Novant Health and its predecessor organization in 1985, it grew from one hospital to 13, from two physicians to 1125, and revenues grew from $80 million to $3.5 billion.

        Novant Health’s notable achievements include receiving the prestigious Ernest A. Codman award presented by The Joint Commission in 2004 and again in 2008 for improving the quality and safety of care provided to patients.  In addition, the American Nurses’ Credentialing Center recognizes the nursing programs at five Novant hospitals for their excellence and quality with the organization’s Magnet recognition.  Other clinical and community service honors include the following:

  • Novant was named to the nation’s 2011 Top 100 Integrated Healthcare Networks, ranking 14th in the country.
  • The national HealthLeaders Media organization honored Novant Health with the 2010 Top Leadership Teams in Healthcare Award for large hospitals and health systems. The national program exists to celebrate outstanding teamwork that occurs in healthcare organizations.
  • Novant received the 2006 and 2011 President’s Award for commitment to service excellence for patients, physicians and employees. The President’s Award is the highest recognition presented by Professional Research Consultants (PRC), a nationally known healthcare research company.
  • NCHA Quality Center reports that seven of the 15 top performing hospitals on the CMS (Medicare) Value Based Purchasing are Novant facilities. 
  • In September 2011 Novant Health and the Cleveland Clinic announced a clinical affiliation for both cardiology and cardiovascular surgery, the only such affiliation for the Cleveland Clinic.
  • In 2011 the Healthcare Research and Education Trust, a division of the AHA, selected Novant Health as one of the three best performing healthcare systems out of the 200 largest systems in the United States.
  • Conversion in 1984 of Forsyth Medical Center from County ownership to a 501(c)(3) not for profit corporation, the first such conversion in the state of North Carolina.
